When to Perform Regular Vehicle Maintenance, By the Mile

Regular Vehicle Maintenance - Indicator Light - Teague Chevrolet

With so many aspects to take care of and so many numbers to keep in mind, vehicle maintenance can be challenging. How many miles should you drive before you get an oil change? Before you change your transmission fluid? What about before you change your spark plugs.

If you’re confused, you can use this easy schedule of regular vehicle maintenance to guide you:

  • Every 5,000 Miles – The cautious driver should get an oil change every 5,000 miles or so, though some argue that you can wait a bit longer in between changes. Check your vehicle manual to know for sure on your model.
  • Every 15,000 Miles – At this point, it’s time for a serious check-up, including an air filter change, tire rotation, and an inspection of your brakes and engine.
  • 30,000 Miles – Now it’s time to change your transmission fluid and fuel filter, in addition to the regular 15,000-mile maintenance.
  • 60,000 Miles – For this mark, you’ll want to take care of all the other milestones previously mentioned and change out any belts or hoses that have seen better days. You may want to change your spark plugs too, depending.
